Metaphoric Self-Portrait
Statement: The Untouchable
One of the most important factors in the portrait is the abundant connection to nature. Nature is the original art form, always in change. This is why there is snow, ice, rocks, leaves, sun, grass, sand, and fire incorporated into the portrait. These items are free to design themselves; artists can manipulate nature but cannot create it. This will be the message to the student’s; no matter what type of art they might produce, the reference comes back to nature. Nature is ever-changing, unique, and original. Also included in the portrait are some of my ceramic works. It is important to express to student’s what I have achieved, and incorporate that as an example of what I see in nature in my own works. In addition, the setting in which the portrait takes place, is a place of comfort. A true sense of security is what a classroom should demonstrate. Student’s can learn so much from nature and the environment around them, in a comfortable setting where we are a community.

Family - The tile around the fireplace should be natural stone, representing the outdoors. Your ceramic artwork makes the portrait look modern. And, the fire should look more real or burnt.
ReplyDeleteThis is a cool picture except for the ice. It's to big and unreal, it pulls your attention away from the rest of the picture.
ReplyDeleteThis is very well designed portrait. The different elements work well together. However, I do agree with the Walled Lake student. The ice is bit large and it draws your attention away from the other aspects of your composition. I really like how you incorporated your own artwork into the image. I also think that it is very important to share your artwork with your students. Sharing your personal artwork with your students helps them to see how passionate you are about art. The sunset picture above the fireplace and the actual fire also help to make the composition of a variety of different images into a whole image. The two have very similar colors, and mirror one another creating a complete composition.
ReplyDeleteI am just amazed. My eyes were first captivated by the vibrant colors and the fireplace. I love how the stone around the fireplace has similar color to that of your pottery. I like how you incorporated the sand and the grass and I really like the picture of the sun set above the mantle. It mirrors the same colors as the fire, my eyes were drawn to that. Very well done.
ReplyDeleteThis piece is truly amaazing. When I look at this piece I see so many different images. In this composition I see the 4 elements of fire, water, eath, and wind. I also see the 4 seasons of winter, spring, summer, and fall. I like the ice in the picture because it is so dramatic and large. I also love the colors they compliment each other and I a harmony in this picture as well.
ReplyDeleteThe first thing that caught my eyes was the different contrast of the earth in it's natural state. Using earth's beauty to amplify your work makes your work look wonderful! I love how you incorporated the different terrains: sand, snow, earth, and rock. I also love the sunset in the mirror, and the ice and leaves, thos look amazing.
ReplyDeleteI think the piece looks great, but there are something’s that look out of place. The desert sand looks out of place and the left side of the work appears unfinished. The rest looks resolved, and I can see the connection you make to your statement. Your ceramics look amazing too; it’s good to show your students what you have done in the past and the accomplishments made along the way.

ReplyDeleteThe Picture was Great I could see
everything that you wanted me to see.
The thing that impressed me was the books in the picture. One must seek knowledge for himself befor he
can teach others or hope to guide them to understand what he wants of them. When you have knowledge and love for what you do it shows and your job become a joy not work
Three things come to me as I look at this portrait. First THE PAST I find the past in all the books and also in the sunset which left behind it a day of hopes and dreams. Second I see the PRESENT in the fire and the ice along with the light from the light fixtures.Third the FUTURE I find it in the sunset for what will tommorrow bring? also in the pottery of the student in that what will his future ideas and creations be that he passes on to his future students of his tommorrow.
ReplyDeleteThe picture was very beautiful and soothing. People here in Michigan know how lucky we are
ReplyDeleteto experience 4 very different
seasons. What is common to all of
them however is the fact that nature is awe inspiring. Your picture reflects this along with your true passion for art. Incorporating your ceramics was an
excellent idea. Always teach from your heart.
This image makes me think of being in a cozy place comfortable and relaxing. Yes, artists need this type of environment to create, so that many ideas may be produced. Therefore, art teachers should provide this type of environment, not only physically, but also mentally. I agree that art relates to nature. We all learn from nature. That also helps us to understand life. The image combines many factors of nature with the use of soft colors for a very vibrant idea. The picture of the sunset over the fire place shows how nature can be under the slight control of man and yet still uncontrollable. The photo was taken by man so in a since captured the sun, and the fire is put into the fireplace by man but burns on its on accord.
ReplyDeleteThe ice and leaves act as a beautiful frame for the upper half of your image. I also really enjoyed the displaying of your personal creations on the mantle. I believe that this adds a touch of home and personality to your portrait. While the top half of your portrait feels very organic and natural, the bottom sections did not blend as effectively into the piece and feel a little bit less natural. Overall however, I really enjoy the composition and intent of your portrait.
ReplyDeleteWhat first struck me in this portrait was the use of lightning. The light from the fire, sconces on the hearth of the fireplace and the reflection in the mirror above the fire all cast a warm glow. It appears to be warm and cozy despite the snow and ice surrounding the fireplace. In addition to the photographs used in this portrait, I love that you incorporated your own ceramic pieces. In doing so, you truly encompassed your ownself. Thank you for sharing your work!
